What is the General Practice Accreditation Exam?
General practice accreditation is a voluntary process by which specialty medical societies recognize specialties of medicine through the awarding of letters of accreditation. The accreditation process typically includes an exam that physicians must pass in order to maintain their accreditation. The General Practice Accreditation Exam is one such exam.
The General Practice Accreditation Exam is a one-day, open-book exam. Applicants must be board certified in a specialty field that includes the practice of general medicine (e.g., Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics) and must possess at least five years of postgraduate training in general practice. The test is administered by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) and requires applicants to demonstrate proficiency in multiple disciplines including clinical skills, medical knowledge and research methods. The Med CPDplatform has been developed by a team of passionate medical professionals for the medical profession.
Several organizations, including the AMA and its physician organizations, have opposed post-doctoral residency for physicians whose primary training has been conducted overseas. They argue that residency programs are designed for the needs of local health systems, which may not be the same as those of U.S. health care providers. Most U.S. medical residency programs are currently accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
