ESAF AWARDS 2016
THE ESAF AWARDS FRAMEWORK WAS DEVELOPED TO RECOGNISE THE CREATIVES THAT BEST REFLECT THE VISION OF OUR FESTIVAL – CONNECT, COMMUNITY, PLATFORM. IT NOT ONLY CONSIDERS PRACTICE AND CONCEPT, BUT ALSO HOW OUR CREATIVES INCORPORATE AN APPRECIATION OF WHAT THE ROLES OF ART AND THE ARTIST MEAN IN THE SOCIAL AND CULTURAL CONTEXTS IN THE CREATIVE COMMUNITY. OUR AWARDS THEREFORE RECOGNISE THOSE WHO HAVE UPHOLD THIS AWARENESS PRIOR TO AND BEYOND OUR FESTIVAL, HELPING TO SHAPE CHANGING PERCEPTIONS OF ART PRACTICE AND CELEBRATING WHAT THE FUTURE HOLDS FOR CREATIVE INDUSTRIES.
BEST VISUAL ARTIST 2016
This year's BEST VISUAL ARTIST AWARD was supported by EDINBURGH MUSEUMS & GALLERIES. The winner was CLAIRE PEARCE with her animation 'BOOM BANG BOOM'. Our panel enjoyed the way that this piece conceptualised homogeny and commodity in their contemporary manifestations. It invokes thoughts about community, politics, and the way collectivised peoples exist in relation to each other. The interaction of the choreography and Claire's taxidermic practice resulted in something innovated, original and enticing. The varying discourses within the piece are autonomous and self-sufficient, yet transcend to comment on wider social, cultural and political discourses.

BEST PERFORMING ARTIST 2016
This year's BEST PERFORMING ARTIST AWARD was sponsored by THE SALTIRE SOCIETY and ON THE ROCKS FESTIVAL. The winner of this award was the collective EVE KLEIN & SONS with their piece 'CLOTH'. Our panel found that this piece enquired into the conceptual transition between public and private worlds in a highly original and creative manner. It explored intimacy, relationships, innocence and the overarching complexity of the human condition through minimalistic, yet deeply symbolic, physical theatre conventions. The idiosyncratic world of the protagonist became something of a shared, communal experience for the audience. The narrative composition was elegant with well-executed transitions between each of the piece's temporal parts.
Eve Klein & Sons performed at On The Rocks Festival as part of our on-going festival exchange. The £750 bursary provided by The Saltire Society has helped to secure private studio space in Edinburgh.
